The Journey

A malaria-free wilderness the size of a small country. Seven nights in one of South Africa's most rewarding, and most underrated, private reserves.

The best family safaris are not the ones where children are merely tolerated. They are the ones designed around curiosity — where a nine-year-old can ask why the elephant flaps its ears, and the guide answers with the kind of unhurried enthusiasm that turns a game drive into a classroom with no walls.

Madikwe Game Reserve sits in South Africa’s North West Province, bordering Botswana, and it earns its reputation quietly. At 75,000 hectares, it is one of the country’s largest protected areas — yet it sees a fraction of the visitors that crowd the more famous reserves. It is also entirely malaria-free, which changes the calculation entirely for families travelling with children. You can focus on the experience rather than the medication regimen.

The wildlife here is extraordinary. Madikwe is home to all of the Big Five, as well as one of Africa’s largest populations of African wild dog — an animal so rare and so compelling that many seasoned safari travellers consider a sighting the single greatest prize in the bush. Cheetah, brown hyena, and both black and white rhino complete a cast that rivals anything the continent offers.

Your accommodation for this journey is Jaci’s Safari Lodge — a family-run property in the truest sense, with a guiding philosophy that puts children at the centre of the experience rather than the edge of it. Junior ranger programmes, dedicated family game vehicles, and a camp that manages to feel simultaneously luxurious and genuinely warm make this the safari that families talk about for the rest of their lives.

The Itinerary

Day by day.
Every detail placed deliberately.

A four-hour road transfer from Johannesburg, or a short charter flight for those who prefer to begin the journey in the air — delivers your family to Madikwe in time for a late afternoon game drive. The reserve's landscape shifts dramatically with the seasons, but its signature is wide, open thornveld and dense riverine bush along seasonal watercourses — a terrain that makes wildlife spotting accessible even for younger eyes. Jaci's Safari Lodge welcomes families with a briefing tailored as much to the children as to the adults, and your assigned guide will spend the evening learning what each member of the family hopes to find. Day 2 opens before sunrise. The lodge provides warm ponchos and hot chocolate for early morning drives, and by the time the sun clears the acacia line your family will have already encountered wildlife that most people only ever see in photographs. The afternoon drive, after lunch and a rest, has a different quality entirely — slower, warmer, the predators beginning to stir as the heat lifts.

Days three and four are given over entirely to the rhythm of the bush. Morning drives, lodge lunches, afternoon rest, and sunset drives that end around the campfire with stories from your guide. On the morning of Day 3, the junior rangers programme takes the children on a dedicated tracking walk — age-appropriate, expertly led, and almost universally the highlight of the trip for younger guests. They will learn to identify spoor, read animal behaviour, and understand the ecosystem in ways no classroom ever delivers. The adults, meanwhile, have the option of a private walking safari alongside a specialist trails guide — slow, deliberate, and profoundly different from anything experienced from a vehicle. Day 4 is when the wild dog usually shows its hand. Madikwe's packs are well-habituated and the guides track them with a dedication bordering on obsession. A wild dog hunt, witnessed from a vehicle at close range, is one of the most electrifying things nature produces. If it happens — and in Madikwe the odds are strongly in your favour — no one in your family will speak for several minutes afterwards.

On Day 5 you move across the reserve to Jaci's Tree Camp, a more intimate property built into the trees above a dry riverbed, where the family occupies a private section of camp with their own guide and vehicle. The shift in perspective is immediate: from the treehouse deck you can watch the waterhole below through binoculars without leaving your suite. An evening sundowner in the field, vehicle pulled up to a rocky outcrop, drinks laid out on the bonnet, the sky doing what African skies do, is the kind of moment that photographs cannot fully contain. Day 6 includes an optional rhino tracking experience with a conservation team operating in the reserve. Getting on foot with white rhino in the company of a specialist anti-poaching guide is both humbling and quietly urgent, a reminder of what is at stake, and what it costs to protect it.

One final dawn drive before breakfast, then the transfer back to Johannesburg for your international departure. The drive home will be quieter than the drive out. Not because the family has run out of things to say — but because everyone is busy storing it all somewhere safe.
